Up to 50 municipalities will have Wi-Fi internet access in public places such as parks, theatres, and libraries on funding from the European Commission, Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Dimiter Genovski said here on Tuesday. He attended the opening of an information day for presenting a project for single point of access to information about existing telecom structure.

The conditions for application will be announced by Genovski's Ministry in September.

"Wi-Fi raises the standard of living, enables children to receive better education, workers to find jobs easily and companies to market their output," Genovski added.

For his part, the Ministry's Chief Secretary, Ivan Markov, presented a project for the development of a single point of access GIS-based electronic platform, implemented on funding under the EU-backed Operational Programme Good Governance. The initiative helps to provide free local wireless connectivity to local public life centres, including open spaces accessible to the general public. It can apply to municipalities or groups of municipalities that would like to offer wireless internet access and who are looking for funding for equipment and installation.
