"For centuries Plovdiv has been a symbol of the culture of our continent. The city was a center of ancient and medieval art and culture. Today, with its rich history and a constellation of contemporary artists, the city is one of the best places for cultural capital of Europe." This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Valery Borisov during a ceremony of putting into service of a thematic collector’s edition postage stamp, which will promote the upcoming event.
Оne of the symbols of the city – the amphitheater, has already been portrayed two times on Bulgarian postage stamps. Once, it embellished a philatelic edition in the late 80s on the occasion of the National Philatelic Exhibition in Plovdiv. In 2002, the building was anchored in the background of the stamp dedicated to the European Chess Championship in Plovdiv.
